The heart of Gasteiz since the Middle Ages, where the whole city meets. The Virgen Blanca watches over the square from the façade of San Miguel, patron saint of Vitoria. In the centre, the monument to the battle of 1813. Every 4 August, at six in the evening, Celedón comes down from the tower on a wire with his umbrella, and the square erupts in cava and flying berets. They say summer starts here. You have to be down in the crowd to understand.
